Hi I was wondering if you could post something in the community newlsetter to promote Run England. It is a nationwide programme set up by England Athletics to get the nation running. It is aimed at those who have never run before or those who would like to run more often. Anyone can join as membership is free. You don’t have to run to join. Our website is http://www.runengland.org
I would love to get a beginner running group started up in this area if there is enough interest. My email is lscott@englandathletics.org

    1. gedhughes Says:

      Hello Lauren

Thanks for your message. This sound like a great idea. I would be very happy to put something on the newsletter and also this website. Would you like to write a little article about your idea and suggestions on how it could be set up and maybe with a photo or logo and I can put it on the site. Everyone wants to get fitter and having encouragement of other people and an organisation’s support sounds great.

Hello again, I am trying to find information on how I may reach the Freeman Family who used to live in Acocks Green back in the 80′s. I am an American and went on a mission trip w/ Nick and Helen Freeman. If you can get me any information on how to contact them or you can give them my email address. Thanks!

Hello, it is always a pleasure to read the acocks green forum news. Thank you for producing this informative leaflet. For two months though i have noticed a minor spelling mistake. On the front instead of public the word pubic has been incorrectly used! It’s not exactly a spelling mistake but I’m sure public meeting was intended not pubic meeting!

    1. gedhughes Says:

Hello Ms Bashir, Thank you for your message. I am very glad that you pointed the typing error out. I hope that most people didn’t notice! I did get somebody to proof read the newsletter but maybe next time I could email it to you to check for any embarrassing errors. Thanks for your positive comments anyway, its appreciated and maybe we’ll see you at the Public Meeting, Kind Regards, Ged Hughes

    1. gedhughes Says:

Hello Adrian, the next meeting is on TUESDAY 13th September. This time, for a change, the format will be a little less formal with a chance for people to chat more with each other and representatives. There will be a speaker from Amey (the subcontractors responsible for upkeep of our roads and pavements). Hope to see you there.
P.S there is a tab on the website – entitled ‘Next Public Meeting’, for future reference.

Hi all. Just to let you know that a local group now exists to discuss the impact of public spending cuts on the Acocks Green community and East Birmingham in general. We are looking at ways to communicate the concerns of local people to Birmingham City Council and other authorities regarding the impact of budget cuts on jobs and services in such areas as healthcare, elderly care, child care, adult social care, the police service and the Citizens Advice Bureau.

The next meeting of Acocks Green Against the Cuts is on Thursday 26th May at 7.30 pm at the Methodist Church, Shirley Road.

Member of the Acocks Green Neighborhood Forum who would like to be involved in campaigning against cuts to local services are very welcome to attend the meeting.

Please contact me if you have any queries or comments. Thanks!

  13. Michelle Says:

    Hi There,

I am advertising an open policy consultation event that is taking place tomorrow in Yardley hosted by the Shadow Secretary of State for Education, Andy Burnham MP. I want to extend an invitation to the members of Acocks Green Neighbourhood Forum to participate in the discussion. We could really benefit from your opinions, so please consider attending and sending this invitation along to anyone else who might be interested.

The event is part of Ed Miliband’s Fresh Ideas campaign in which he and his shadow cabinet are touring the country to speak to people with ideas about how we should move forward. It is an entirely open, non-partisan event, and we welcome a diversity of views and opinions.

The event will be held on Thursday 24th March in Yardley. The doors will open at 1pm, while Andy will actually open the discussion at 1:30pm. The venue for the event will be confirmed after people register on the website: http://www.fresh-ideas.org.uk/yardley. Alternatively, I can register people quite easily if given their information.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

Are there any plans to do anything in Acocks Green for the Royal wedding? It would be a shame to miss an opportunity for a good community event!

  15. Mark Says:

    Dear all,

It seems that over the past 4 weeks Acocks Green is being targeted by traffic and ANPR policing. I witnessed myself an officer screaming his head off by Mecca bingo at a driver for failing to slow down to 30, despite the fact that the road is a 40mph zone. I’d love to know what is going on – and why is the area being penalized by the police – I’m not currently a driver, but the traffic’s getting worse and worse and they’ve woke my daughter up twice this week blasting down the Shirley road to stop people for minor issues like a faulty light.

    -mark.

    1. gedhughes Says:

      Hello Mark
Acocks Green Police have monthly public meetings known as Tasking Meetings, for people to raise local issues. They are the first Thursday of every month at 7pm at Archbishop Ilsleys (by Jeffries). Maybe you could bring this up with them directly at this Thursdays meeting. I’m sure they would be interested in your comments.

  16. Joel Lane Says:

Hi all. Thought you’d like to know that a public meeting is planned in Acocks Green to discuss ways of mounting a local campaign against the public service cuts planned by the Council.

The meeting is on Thursday 10th March at 7.30 pm at the Methodist Church on the corner of Botteville Road and Shirley Road. It’s being organised by the Birmingham branch of the Socialist Party, who have had a regular stall in Acocks Green village for about a year.

The declared Council service cuts – the worst ever declared by a single UK local authority – will severely damage the local economy and the community, increase the crime rate and take away essential services for children, the elderly, the sick and the disabled – as well as cutting 8,000 Council jobs just as the Government has declared major cuts in housing benefit to the unemployed. Many of those losing their jobs will also lose their homes.

Member of the Acocks Green Neighborhood Forum are very welcome to attend the meeting. If you want to be involved in campaigning against cuts to local services and would like to speak at the meeting, please contact me ASAP.

I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seeing you at the meeting. Apologies for the short notice.

    Hello all,

I was amazed to discover a Tai Chi class, every Thursday, in Acocks Green and if I can find 3 other people the instructor is prepared to start a beginners class at 8pm every Thursday for a 5 week absolute beginners class. Tai Chi is a great way to keep supple and relax at the same time, learning a skill practiced for more than 300 years.

    1. gedhughes Says:

      Hello Alan
Thank you for this information. It looks like an interesting opportunity for local people. Keep us informed of developments.

  18. Quick update on the refuse collection situation

Efforts to clear the backlog of domestic waste in Birmingham, caused by ongoing industrial action plus increased volumes and severe weather problems over the festive period, continue to gather pace with 1,594 tonnes of refuse collected from the city streets yesterday (Jan 6).

This waste was collected by a combination of regular crews ‘working to rule’ on their usual Thursday rounds and 20 additional ‘casual crews’ who have been deployed to help clear the backlog.

The team co-ordinating the backlog recovery are identifying ‘hotspots’ in your area so that casual crews working throughout the weekend can work more effectively.

Once the further outstanding waste from the bank holidays and festive period is caught up, the casual crews will remain in place working seven days a week, to deal with missed collections and other issues caused by the ongoing industrial action.

Significant amounts of extra waste have also been deposited at the city’s five Household Recycling Centres (HRCs), where visitor numbers have more than doubled over the past week thanks to extended opening hours from 8am to 9pm everyday.

For the fortnight beginning 20th December 2010, 1309 tonnes of waste was deposited at the city’s HRCs – this compares to 1,054 tonnes in 2009-10 – an increase of 24%.

I saw a poster in Leicester last week it had a picture of a fairy and the text said ” there is no such thing as the dog poo fairy” and then it goes on to say so use a bag and pick it up, any bag will do- or something like that. I thought it was good ‘reminder’ and perhaps these posters could be bought and put on lamp posts along roads which are suffering, like Yardley Road.

    1. gedhughes Says:

Hello Eileen, thanks for your comment. These posters sound like a good idea. I wonder who made them. School children made some posters and laminated them for the alleyway at the side of Cottesbrooke Junior on the same subject. Unfortunately they were removed mysteriously after a short while.

  20. Julian Walton Says:

Hello there, can anyone enlighten me? The LCD “what’s on” notice thingy outside Lloyds Bank in town is advertising events which have already happened. It’s extremely disconcerting when driving past towards the green. Can it be up-dated or turned off? Many thanks, Julian

    1. gedhughes Says:

      Hi Julian
Yes I noticed that. You’ve reminded me to do something about it. I will email the person in the council responsible.
      Thanks for getting in contact.

    Please Help!

Hi, I’m having alot of problems with the buses lined up waiting to be parked (in the bus depo)close my house.
My neighbours are also been complaining and have had problems due to the buses obstructing our drive ways.
We are having problems getting in to park in our drive ways and it’s worse getting out.
I just fear what if we have to get somewhere in emergency or if we needed an emergency help. How obstructing!
They’re not helpfull at all. My house go burgled while these buses were lined up outside and no one saw a thing! Talk about careless!
Now I have an elderly lady living next door who isn’t very well and sometimes I wonder what if she is in need of the emergency service.
    The buses won’t budge!
What can I do? Does anyone have a suitable advice to help.

    1. gedhughes Says:

      Hello Mrs Q

You could try taking it up with your local councillors, they hold regular drop in sessions – click on the link for more details : Acocks Green Councillors

The manager of Acocks Green Bus Depot is Mark Kipling. You could try writing to him directly or even going in and asking to see him.

Let us know how you get on.

  23. Amanda Baker Says:

    1. gedhughes Says:

Hello Eddie. I designed it myself via wordpress.com – it is a Blog and you can set one up yourself with a little computer knowledge. And its Free! Our Forum was given help to set the website up by some local people who give voluntary support in social media know-how via ‘Social Media Surgeries’. If you are a community group then you can get their help too. For more information – http://bevocal.org.uk. There is also a community of Birmingham Bloggers who share ideas and knowledge on line and face to face.

  26. James Says:

Hi, please could you supply me with the website/email address for re com computers, based in stockfield rd, please

  27. Catherine Farmer Says:

Bit of a bizarre request, but wondering if any one can help us with something. We are tyring to track down an elderly lady, Susanne E James who lived (lives) in the area. We believe she lived at 1286 Warwick Road. She was married to a Ron James who died some years ago. Possibly Susanne/Sue moved in with her family, although we understand her son Peter, an accountant, now lives in the US.

This is all part of a story we are doing for BBC radio.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards

  28. gedhughes Says:

Hi Helen I have posted about the show and received flyers at Cottesbrooke Junior where I work, I will spread the word there too.

    Good luck with the show.
