I’ve just had a man at the door telling me that Broadband is now free and could he come in and talk to me about it. He didn’t have a badge or leaflets or anything like that. It seems like a scam to me and I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this? I sent him packing but I don’t want someone to get caught out by anything dodgy.

Hello
I represent an allotment that is pursuing a community orchard and wonder if you have any advice for us.
January 4, 2013 at 8:42 am
Hello Stuart
Glad to hear that you are also pursuing a community orchard. Are you in Birmingham?
This is all new to us so we are not experts, however it depends what advice you need. There are many things to consider – the agreement from the landowners is the first hurdle, the type of planting, funding, raising awareness, volunteer participation, education of eating ‘wild fruit’ and encouraging local people to partipate in the growing scheme, making it sustainable. We are hoping to get the local schools involved and subsequently the parents who live locally.
Good luck and let us know if you need more specific advice. This is all very general.
Kind Regards

Hello Sarah
Sorry to hear the trouble you are having finding a school place for your daughter.
The Schools Admissions service are the department within Birmingham City Council who should deal with your request. All I can suggest is you contact them again and explain that you are not happy with their lack of service, tel 0121 675 0555. If you are still getting no joy then you could ask advice from the Councillors for our area who holds drop in advice sessions on Monday evenings at Acocks Green library and Friday evenings at Archbishop Ilsleys, click the link for all details. http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/cs/Satellite?c=Page&childpagename=SystemAdmin%2FPageLayout&cid=1223109496955&packedargs=website%3D1&pagename=BCC%2FCommon%2FWrapper%2FWrapper&rendermode=live

I have a number of issues which I wanted to bring to your attention, these relate to the area of parkland between the canal and oakmeadow near Cambridge Way.
1) We are reugularly appraoched by dogs off leads while on the pathway with my daughter in a pushchair.
2) Dogs are ‘walked’ in this area and not all of the mess is cleared away.
3) Youths have been seen on mopeds / motorbikes on the pathways
4) Criminal damage at the allotments is common. Approx 30 sheds have been burned down in 2 years by arsonists.
This area of parkland and allotments cannot be used by families in the manner expected as a result of these issues.
Police are not providing sufficient resources in this area to prevent these issues.
I would love to see your group discussing these issues and escalating with the Council and Police so that in the future my family and I may be able to enjoy these outside spaces.
May 2, 2012 at 7:29 pm
Hello S Bagnall
Thank you for contacting the website. The problems at the allotments were briefly discussed at the Public Meeting last week, as there was a member of public who had been directly affected. The Police that look after your area are South Yardley officers and I will pass your concerns on to one of our committee members who lives near you and regularly attends local Police Meetings about issues in your area. You could also bring your concerns up with the councillors at their surgeries. Here is the link, but as you may imagine, this may all change in the next day or two.

The speed limit was reduced from 40 to 30mph on the 3rd November 2011, no signs to inform drivers of this when coming from School Road
August 8, 2012 at 1:00 pm
have lived in Tyseley for over 15 years now. The only way I knew of the reduced speed limit to 30mph on this road was recently through Acocks Green Police on Facebook. There are very few signs advising of this limit. Now when I drive at 30mph in the outside lane because of parked cars on the inside lane, I get people driving right on my bumper because they think I am driving 10mph too slow, after all, most dual carriageways are at least 40mph aren’t they. Definitely need more 30 signs up on this road. Also, I know its been like this for years now, but who’s idea is it to make both sides of a dual carriageway two way traffic? (Olton Boulevard think it is)
August 8, 2012 at 1:37 pm
There doesn’t actually need to be any signs to inform you that it’s 30 mph. If there are street lights and no signs then it is automatically 30 mph. I do however agree that people don’t realise this and tailgate you when you are doing 30 mph. There should have been more information to tell people that there had been a change.

Hello, it is always a pleasure to read the acocks green forum news. Thank you for producing this informative leaflet. For two months though i have noticed a minor spelling mistake. Hi all. Just to let you know that a local group now exists to discuss the impact of public spending cuts on the Acocks Green community and East Birmingham in general. We are looking at ways to communicate the concerns of local people to Birmingham City Council and other authorities regarding the impact of budget cuts on jobs and services in such areas as healthcare, elderly care, child care, adult social care, the police service and the Citizens Advice Bureau.
The next meeting of Acocks Green Against the Cuts is on Thursday 26th May at 7.30 pm at the Methodist Church, Shirley Road.
Member of the Acocks Green Neighborhood Forum who would like to be involved in campaigning against cuts to local services are very welcome to attend the meeting.
Please contact me if you have any queries or comments. Thanks!

Hi There,
I am advertising an open policy consultation event that is taking place tomorrow in Yardley hosted by the Shadow Secretary of State for Education, Andy Burnham MP. I want to extend an invitation to the members of Acocks Green Neighbourhood Forum to participate in the discussion. We could really benefit from your opinions, so please consider attending and sending this invitation along to anyone else who might be interested.
The event is part of Ed Miliband’s Fresh Ideas campaign in which he and his shadow cabinet are touring the country to speak to people with ideas about how we should move forward. It is an entirely open, non-partisan event, and we welcome a diversity of views and opinions.
The event will be held on Thursday 24th March in Yardley. The doors will open at 1pm, while Andy will actually open the discussion at 1:30pm. The venue for the event will be confirmed after people register on the website: http://www.fresh-ideas.org.uk/yardley. Alternatively, I can register people quite easily if given their information.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

February 28, 2011 at 7:21 pm
Dear all,
It seems that over the past 4 weeks Acocks Green is being targeted by traffic and ANPR policing. I witnessed myself an officer screaming his head off by Mecca bingo at a driver for failing to slow down to 30, despite the fact that the road is a 40mph zone. I’d love to know what is going on – and why is the area being penalized by the police – I’m not currently a driver, but the traffic’s getting worse and worse and they’ve woke my daughter up twice this week blasting down the Shirley road to stop people for minor issues like a faulty light.
-mark.
February 28, 2011 at 7:38 pm
Hello Mark
Acocks Green Police have monthly public meetings known as Tasking Meetings, for people to raise local issues. They are the first Thursday of every month at 7pm at Archbishop Ilsleys (by Jeffries). Maybe you could bring this up with them directly at this Thursdays meeting. I’m sure they would be interested in your comments.
February 26, 2011 at 5:45 pm
Hi all. Thought you’d like to know that a public meeting is planned in Acocks Green to discuss ways of mounting a local campaign against the public service cuts planned by the Council.
The meeting is on Thursday 10th March at 7.30 pm at the Methodist Church on the corner of Botteville Road and Shirley Road. It’s being organised by the Birmingham branch of the Socialist Party, who have had a regular stall in Acocks Green village for about a year.
The declared Council service cuts – the worst ever declared by a single UK local authority – will severely damage the local economy and the community, increase the crime rate and take away essential services for children, the elderly, the sick and the disabled – as well as cutting 8,000 Council jobs just as the Government has declared major cuts in housing benefit to the unemployed. Many of those losing their jobs will also lose their homes.
Member of the Acocks Green Neighborhood Forum are very welcome to attend the meeting. If you want to be involved in campaigning against cuts to local services and would like to speak at the meeting, please contact me ASAP.
I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seeing you at the meeting. Apologies for the short notice.

Quick update on the refuse collection situation
Efforts to clear the backlog of domestic waste in Birmingham, caused by ongoing industrial action plus increased volumes and severe weather problems over the festive period, continue to gather pace with 1,594 tonnes of refuse collected from the city streets yesterday (Jan 6).
This waste was collected by a combination of regular crews ‘working to rule’ on their usual Thursday rounds and 20 additional ‘casual crews’ who have been deployed to help clear the backlog.
The team co-ordinating the backlog recovery are identifying ‘hotspots’ in your area so that casual crews working throughout the weekend can work more effectively.
Once the further outstanding waste from the bank holidays and festive period is caught up, the casual crews will remain in place working seven days a week, to deal with missed collections and other issues caused by the ongoing industrial action.
Significant amounts of extra waste have also been deposited at the city’s five Household Recycling Centres (HRCs), where visitor numbers have more than doubled over the past week thanks to extended opening hours from 8am to 9pm everyday.
For the fortnight beginning 20th December 2010, 1309 tonnes of waste was deposited at the city’s HRCs – this compares to 1,054 tonnes in 2009-10 – an increase of 24%.

I saw a poster in Leicester last week it had a picture of a fairy and the text said ” there is no such thing as the dog poo fairy” and then it goes on to say so use a bag and pick it up, any bag will do- or something like that. I thought it was good ‘reminder’ and perhaps these posters could be bought and put on lamp posts along roads which are suffering, like Yardley Road.
October 4, 2010 at 10:12 am
Hello Eileen, thanks for your comment. These posters sound like a good idea. I wonder who made them. School children made some posters and laminated them for the alleyway at the side of Cottesbrooke Junior on the same subject. Unfortunately they were removed mysteriously after a short while.

Please Help!
Hi, I’m having alot of problems with the buses lined up waiting to be parked (in the bus depo)close my house.
My neighbours are also been complaining and have had problems due to the buses obstructing our drive ways.
We are having problems getting in to park in our drive ways and it’s worse getting out.
I just fear what if we have to get somewhere in emergency or if we needed an emergency help. How obstructing!
They’re not helpfull at all. My house go burgled while these buses were lined up outside and no one saw a thing! Talk about careless!
Now I have an elderly lady living next door who isn’t very well and sometimes I wonder what if she is in need of the emergency service.
The buses won’t budge!
What can I do? Does anyone have a suitable advice to help.

Hello Eddie. I designed it myself via wordpress.com – it is a Blog and you can set one up yourself with a little computer knowledge. And its Free! Our Forum was given help to set the website up by some local people who give voluntary support in social media know-how via ‘Social Media Surgeries’. If you are a community group then you can get their help too. For more information – http://bevocal.org.uk. There is also a community of Birmingham Bloggers who share ideas and knowledge on line and face to face.
Best Wishes

Bit of a bizarre request, but wondering if any one can help us with something. We are tyring to track down an elderly lady, Susanne E James who lived (lives) in the area. We believe she lived at 1286 Warwick Road. She was married to a Ron James who died some years ago. Possibly Susanne/Sue moved in with her family, although we understand her son Peter, an accountant, now lives in the US.
This is all part of a story we are doing for BBC radio.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
