Tree Planting in the Westley Vale 2011

The Westley Vale Millennium Green Trust has been very fortunate in being awarded several hundred tree saplings by The Woodland Trust.  The trees need to be planted on the site as soon as possible so the trustees are asking for local people to join in and help with a spring clean up and tree planting on Saturday – 19th March. They are looking for as many volunteers as possible to help with the planting and it would be wonderful to have a large group photograph to send to The Woodland Trust showing our appreciation and the site of the new  potential ‘forest’ !!   Full details below:

Thanks to the Westley Vale trustees, local people and scouts who worked hard to make the celebration of our Millennium Green a great success.  The weather was fair and the local pagan group gave the Green a very special blessing. Our Lord Mayor, Councillor Len Gregory, honoured the site by planting a tree. We are fortunate to have this special green space in our area, long may it flourish for our community to enjoy.

Westley Vale Millennium Green 10 Year Celebration

This Saturday – 16th October, the trustees of the Westley Vale Millennium Green are organising an autumnal tidy up of the site.  Everyone in the area is welcome to come along and get stuck in with  some practical help – to clean up our treasured green space.   Volunteers are invited to meet at 10am at the gates on The Avenue,  (or just turn up when you can).  Equipment is provided but gardening gloves are a good idea.  Refreshments free to all workers.

At the spring time tidy up there was a great turn out of  enthusiastic local people – lets see if we can match the crowd of last time.

The Westley Vale Millennium Green has recently undergone some improvement work financed by Section 106 funding resulting from the nearby residential development. The majority of the funding has been spent on new sturdy fencing which improves safety and reinforces the footpath.

Other improvements include new metal benches and hand railing.  The Millennium Green Trustees are also thankful to the paint company Indestructable Paint Ltd who supplied free of charge, the hard-wearing paint used for the Millennium Green’s gates.

It felt like springtime at last down at Westley Vale Millennium Green on the Sunday before last.  Thanks to the pleasant weather there was a record-breaking turn out of volunteers.  After lots of litter- picking, planting, dividing bulbs and general tidying up the group enjoyed a well earned cuppa and biscuit.    Thanks to everyone who came along to help out.  If you would like to join in next time let the Forum know and they can ask the Trustees to put you on a mailing list.  Apart from these special organised events many local people pick up litter regularly when walking through Westley Vale and encourage others to keep the space tidy and litter-free.

If you are not familiar with the site then why not explore this little oasis with access from  The Avenue, the end of Malvern Road and The Old Vineries canal bridge.   There is lots of nature to enjoy at this time of year –  listen out for the woodpeckers who have been making themselves known recently.

The Trustees of the Millennium Green invite local people to join them on site for a clean-up session on Saturday 21st November between 10am and 2pm.

Come along and make a difference to your local environment, all that is needed is energy and enthusiasm.  Refreshments offered to all volunteers! Whatever time you can spare is appreciated.
