Thanks to everyone who attended our public meeting last Thursday.  It was lively and informative.  Two representatives from the Planning Department, Ian MacLeod and Doug Lee, discussed the Core Strategy 2026 – the strategic plans for our city. The council are looking for feedback from citizens on the proposals and you can comment until 18th March. For more information and if you would like to share your views with the council go to: http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/corestrategy

Also thank you to Melinda Brown, Town Centre Manager, who gathered lots of feedback about Acocks Green Village from the attendees, who were asked to write their views on flipchart paper under various headings.

Sgt Mirams from Acocks Green Police also updated the meeting with the latest news, including that good news that the PCSOs in Acocks Green will not be affected by cutbacks and so will continue to support the local community.  There has also been an increase in burglary in our area which the force are working hard to address.

Councillors Penny Wagg and Roger Harmer were also present, responding and taking note of people’s concerns regarding the recent road resurfacing and other issues.

John Green from Waste and Fleet Management was also present to discuss waste issues and inform us of changes in waste management in the area which will now be looked after by a local team.

There was also a heated discussion about the Church Hall where the meeting took place and the plans by Stockfield Association to demolish and redevelop the site.  Many people have a real attachment to the present building [called the Glyn Edwards Hall] and are concerned about losing it to  see it replaced by glass fronted modern building. Everyone in the area is welcome to come along to our next Public Meeting and AGM.  It takes place at the Church Hall on Yardley Road, close to the Police Station.   The meeting starts at 7.30pm and usually finishes around 9pm.  The Guest Speaker is Mike Byrne – Librarian of AG Library and Local Historian.  He will be giving a short presentation on the history of Acocks Green.

The Local Police will also be in attendance to update the meeting.  There will be an opportunity to raise any concerns or issues with the Forum.

Refreshments will be served.

Thanks to all those members of the public who came along to the Public Meeting last Thursday.  Thanks also go to Joe Peacock, a keen cyclist from Friends of the Earth, who addressed the group about their campaign to reduce speed limits to 20 miles an hour in residential areas.  He explained that Portsmouth had already adopted this limit and it had been seen to be successful. Birmingham FOE are encouraging local people and groups to support this campaign to introduce it in Birmingham. The limit only applies to non ‘A’ Roads but makes it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.  He explained that reducing the speed to this figure would result in less slowing down and speeding up and so the average speed is often not affected.  There was much discussion on the subject, some people had reservations but approximately 50% of the meeting thought it would be a good idea.  What are your views? Let us know by leaving a comment.

PCSOs and Sgt Mirams from the local Constabulary  also attended, giving the meeting an update of policing issues.  More discussion ensued about the alleyway from Stockfield to Yardley Road, no decision has yet been made, Sgt Mirams accepted that there were 2 sides to the argument for closing it permanently.  There is some debate as to whether is is deemed an official Public Right of Way, even though it has been in existence for over 50 years.

Thanks to Jennifer for offering those in attendance fresh coffee, tea and mince pies!  The next Public Meeting is in February, check this site for more details.

The meeting welcomed over 30 members of the local community.  Also the Forum was very thankful for the Guest Speakers -

Jeremy Shields, Head of Waste Management

John Green, Ward Operations, Waste Management

Bari Aziz, Ward Support Officer

Sgt David Mirams  from Acocks Green Police, John Hemming MP, Councillor Roger Harmer and Melinda Brown, Town Centre Manager were also present to answer any questions and update the meeting on local news.

It was an enlightening and interesting meeting.  Bari Aziz the Ward Support Officer explained his role in the Yardley Constituency area.  He said that the people of Acocks Green were the most pro-active in the area who regularly contacted him for help and advice on local issues.  He welcomed the people of the meeting to phone or email him with any concerns that crop up, he explained that it is his job to wherever possible, resolve problems that  were raised by local residents.

Jeremy Shields, Head of Waste Management was welcomed to the meeting to refuse and recycling.  In order to alay occasional negative media coverage he reassured the meeting that all recycling in Birmingham is recycled and is not shipped miles and miles or does not end up in landfill.  All paper collected from Blue Boxes is recycled in Nechells.  Recycling of contents from the Green Boxes and bags takes place in the Midlands.

One member of the public asked Jeremy what could be done about the spillage from green bags, Mr Shields made an important point that green bags should NOT be tied up because they have to be emptied by the crew and opening bags that have been tied is a more difficult and messy job.  Birmingham now recycles over 30% of its household waste and the point of Jeremy attending this meeting is to ask the public to encourage more recycling amongst their friends, neighbours and families.   He answered several questions from the floor and concluded that if there are any other queries regarding waste disposal the number to phone is 0121 303 1112

Melinda Brown (TCM)  and John Green from Waste Management also updated the meeting on news that more litter bins were to be placed on Yardley Road, to help combat the litter problem in the area.

Sgt Mirams informed the meeting about the regular Police Tasking Meetings.  These are scheduled monthly (see latest newsletter for the list of the dates), at AG Police Station.  They are an opportunity for the public to meet with the local police team face to face, in order to discuss any concerns.  He also informed the meeting that the team will be calling at households to meet local residents and ask if there are any issues or concerns in the area.

The next Public Meeting is Thursday 3rd December at the usual venue.
