Here in Acocks Green a lot of people have their waste collection day scheduled for the Christmas public holidays, so there will be changes to the usual collection day. Check the table below to see when to put your household and recycling out for collection.
Possible Industrial Action
It has also just been announced that there may be some industrial action by the bin collectors in early January. This is frustrating for citizens but you can sign up to get email updates about any changes there may be to the waste and recycling collections. Click on the HERE to register for updates.

Changes in 2025 – Increasing recycling
We all need to play a part in improving the city’s recycling rate which is one of the lowest in the country at 22.9%. The government has set a recycling target of 65% by 2035, so major improvements need to be made. The amount of ‘unusable’ recycling collected has increased from 11.1% in 2019/2020 to 30.6% last year (2023/2024). Recycling is unusable if it is mixed with items that:
- Cannot be recycled
- Should have been sorted into a different container
- Have not been cleaned properly
If you have any queries about what you can and can’t recycle you can check current guidance HERE
The Council have made plans to make it easier for us to increase the amount we recycle and improve its quality – this will include a new Green Lid bin for paper and cardboard, and the current Blue Lid bins will be just for plastic, glass and metal. The paper recycling pods will be removed.
There will be a new fleet of bin lorries operating in 2025 and the introduction of a weekly food waste collection, being phased in from July in the Acocks Green area. This will coincide with household waste collections be reduced to fortnightly instead of weekly.

If you have extra or large rubbish to dispose of you can always take it to the local household waste and recycling centre in Tyseley. You will need to book a time slot, you cannot turn up without making an appointment. Click HERE to book.

Seasons Greetings from Acocks Green Neighbourhood Forum!

The information was helpful.
However, on several occasions our recycling has been comingled with refuse making it unusable!
Hello Adrian, I agree, same in other roads, most frustrating after you spend time washing and separating the recycling. Their excuse was the lorries weren’t working properly. At least with the new fleet and targets they will hopefully see some improvements.
