What Will You Learn in 2014?

As 2014 commences, it is a time to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. There is always something new to learn and Birmingham Adult Education Service has many new courses starting in January. In Acocks Green village we are lucky to  have the Stone Hall Adult Education Centre, (Warwick Road, opposite St Mary’s Church) which hosts many different opportunities to learn new skills for pleasure or to gain qualifications. Courses range from sewing classes, ESOL, computers, singing, pottery, Great Women in History, Computerised Accounts, job searching and interview skills and lots more!  If you are in receipt of benefits then some of the courses may be free.

Join the Allotment Movement

There is nothing more rewarding than eating fresh home grown food and there is an opportunity in Acocks Green to do just that.

There are vacant plots available at the local allotments. Sizes and costs vary and they are half price for Over 60s. Gardening on an allotment gives you lots of space to dedicate to growing your favourite produce and the advice and experience of other local gardeners is also close at hand. And of course, fresh air, exercise and array of healthy food! This is a good time to start an allotment so that you can prepare the land for spring planting. It might be an idea to get family and friends involved too and then you can share the rewards.  If you are a new to gardening  there are lots of helpful gardening books at the local libraries.

Steve Cox (pictured) is on the committee for Clay Lane & Wharf Land  Allotments (just off Yardley Road and near Yardley Cemetry). He can give advice on taking a plot and organise viewings. To contact Steve by can email: claylaneallotments@gmail.com
