Get Snapping *****Deadline for entries extended until 12 noon Friday 16th November*****

The Acocks Green Business Improvement District team (BID) are running a Photographic Competition with prizes being awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. The team are in the process of creating a new website for the Village and thought what a good idea it would be to hold a competition for people to enter so that they could take interesting photos of Acocks Green that will go on to feature to the BID website and other promotional material.

The brief is to capture the essence of Acocks Green in photographs, and be as clever and imaginative as you like!  The Neighbourhod Forum thinks this is a great opportunity to get people along to the village to have a look at what we have to offer, and to be in with a chance of winning a prize.
All images should be submitted in JPEG format and emailed to agvbidinfo@gmail.com or postal address: Acocks Green BID, Office 10 Dolphin Court, 1227-1231 Warwick Road, Acocks Green, B27 6PX
The closing date for entries is 12 noon on 16th November, and the winners will be announced ‘on stage’ at the Acocks Green Christmas Lights Switch-on event on Saturday 17th November.
Please note, entries cannot include images of children, and the BID reserves the right to use all images submitted for judging in its promotional materials and website.
So get your cameras out and good luck!

Musical Delights at St Mary’s Church

The Swansong concerts continued with Consort Pleon joining us at St Mary’s in the village, on Wednesday 26th September, when they offered a performance of English Baroque music from around 1600 – 1750.  Apparently, Pleon is an old English word meaning to venture or take risk.  They are a group formed in 2009, from musicians at Birmingham Conservatoire and The Royal Academy, London.  The audience of approximately 50 folk, assembled for a thoroughly enjoyable performance of this period music in the majestic surrounding of St Mary’s Church.

The musical compositions were from Henry Purcell – Sonatas No 4 in F and No 3 in G minor, together with ‘Music for a while’ (Z.583) 1692 – ‘Sweeter than Roses’ from Six songs by Purcell (Z.585) 1695.  Together with Matthew Locke – Suite No 5 in F minor the Little Consort 1656 and Suite No 3 in C major the Broken Consort c 1660. Jon Blow – ‘Poor Celadon’ (Loving above himself) from ‘Amphion Anglicus’, 1700 and Robert Parsons – ‘Pour down, you pow’rs devine’ (Pandolpho) 1535 – 1572, also an anonymous piece called – ‘My little sweet darling’.

Consort Pleon fills St Mary’s Church with their Baroque music, September 2012

The musicians Sara Wilander – Harpsicord, Cello – Lucia Capellaro, Violins – Katarina Dordevic and Guy Noel Clarissa, were ably accompanied by the Counter Tenor Meili Li, who all received our extended acclaim, to which they treated us to an extra finale. The chuch setting gave the evening a sense of timeless grandeur and the accoustics of the building lent themselves perfectly to the music style. Thanks go to Mike Byrne, former librarian in Acocks Green, for continuing to organise such delightful evenings in our neighbourhood and to Revd. Andrew Bullock for welcoming the musicans and audience so warmly.  The next Swansong concert will again be at St Mary’s Church on Wed 21st November at 7.30pm with the CBSO Baroque Players.  Free entry, contributions at the end. Everyone welcome.

Medal-Winning Village

We hope that residents noticed the great improvements in the look of the village in the last few months with floral enhancements and general tidying up.  For the first time Acocks Green Village was entered into the Britain in Bloom competition, under the ‘Urban Category’.  Many locals helped tidy and plant up flowerbeds, weed overgrown reservations and encourage people to take a pride in their surroundings. Businesses and the council helped by repairing crumbling walls and dealing with dumped rubbish. The whole project was overseen with the vision, dedication and tireless hardwork and enthusiasm of local resident and RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) volunteer  – Fran Lee.

In July the Britain in Bloom judges toured our centre to look at the work that the volunteers had put into improving the village and this month medals were awarded to community groups around the country. Britain in Bloom is an initiative organised by the Royal Horticultural Society in which communities can illustrate their civic pride by enhancing their local area.

In towns and cities, most of the input comes from the local authority but does involve schools and communities whereas those entries from villages, urban areas and neighbourhoods are mainly organised by volunteers.

Our region is organised by The Heart of England in Bloom which has formed a panel of judges who visit each entry usually in July to judge each entry.  Nowadays it is not all about flowers although Horticultural Achievement does attract 40% of the marks.  This year, the RHS asked entrants to plant wild flowers or single flowering plants as pollinators for our ailing bee population.  The team of volunteers planted lots of these in Acocks Green this year.   ‘In Bloom’ is also about maintenance of the fabric of an area, keeping it litter and graffiti free, keeping the street furniture in good condition and the fabric of the area, for example keeping walls in good repair.  Another important element is to encourage community spirit.  People are brought together by working on projects in their area.  It also encourages communities to come together to raise funds for projects but also for charity.

Acocks GreenVillage gained a Bronze award  which was a first for the village.  Also Cottesbrooke Junior School gained Bronze and Acocks Green Primary School gained Silver in the School Grounds campaign.  In Fox Hollies, they gained Outstanding and Pemberley Road gained Thriving in the Neighbourhood Awards.

These Bloom initiatives are deemed to be very important in creating a better society for the future by bringing people together to take pride in their area.

If you are interested in becoming involved in future Bloom projects in Acocks Green then contact the BID Manager Sandy Gianni by email: agvbid@gmail.com
