Community Spirit on Grand Union

The weather looked off putting on Sunday for the scheduled clean up on the Grand Union canal, but it dried up and we had a great turn out of around 10 people come along. We pulled out rubbish from the canal, including a shopping trolley (of course), a strimmer and other debris.  Lots of litter was cleared from reachable areas of the canal and from the tow path.

We now need to educate local people about keeping our area clean, not dropping litter, not dumping rubbish over their garden fence and not thinking out-of-sight, out-of-mind. It is quite possible that the litter dumped in the canal in Acocks Green could end up in our oceans, polluting our environment for years and years to come.

Thanks for the support from the Canals and Rivers Trust.  They supplied us with some native primroses and campion. They also brought all the equipment we needed. We swept up lots of dead leaves and made a real difference,  thanks to everyone who turned up to help tidy our stretch.

Speeding Cars… Report Form

The Neighbourhood Forum has had many people contact us via the website and at our Public Meetings with their concerns about speeding cars on their nearby roads. It can be a real safety concern and alarming to see, also loud racing cars at night can disturb people’s sleep.

There is now a form on the Birmingham City Council website where you can report such issues – the council may then pass the information to the police. We can all play a part in trying to improve our neighbourhood :

New Venture in Acocks Green?

There’s a whole of host of activities each week at Fox Hollies Forum on Greenwood Avenue, including a luncheon club, knitting club, Line Dancing and starting this year – Carpet Bowls.  Check out their Facebook page for up to date information. The latest plan is to start a Men’s Shed.. something new and different for AG. There is an established group in Kings Heath.. so it would be great to start one here.  For more information about the successful Men’s Shed movement check out their website. And if you are interested spread the word and go along to the meeting on the 21st January.men shed

Also funds raised go to the worthwhile cause of  local charity NICE

Stage 27 invites you to join us as we embark on a magical journey to Panto-Land. Princess Beauty has pricked her finger whilst helping Mother Droopy on her latest business venture and fallen into a deep sleep, cursed by Hogben the ugly old crone. Only the kiss of a handsome stranger will save her – join Fiddle, Tinkle, Betty, King Jeff, Queen Britney and their dimwit servant PLOP (no naughty. not that kind!) as they fight to save the Princess and the Kingdom, whilst trying to outwit Hogben and her sarcastic feline friend.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Acocks Green Neighbourhood Forum would like to wish the local community the warmest Seasons Greetings.

On Saturday it is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day, a day of celebration as once again the days will start getting longer, a positive thought to focus on!

In 2019 we will continue to encourage a good community spirit and active citizenship in our area. Our next Public Meeting will be on 26th February.  Keep in touch with our website for more useful updates.

Acocks Green Calendar 2019

Exclusive Calendar for Acocks Green – featuring photographs of our village at its best – AVAILABLE NOW

Photographs have been taken by local people and capture Acocks Green through the seasons at its best.  Lots of space to write your appointments with all the notable days printed. An attractive and useful addition to every wall.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who submitted photographs. We had so many to choose from, it was a difficult decision, but it was great to see such a variety of views.

As far as we know we are the only suburb of Birmingham that has its own contemporary views calendar.  A perfect present and ideal to post to friends and family who live abroad, have childhood memories of the area, or for people who want to explore the area more and be pleasantly surprised.

Calendar available where.pub2019
It has been produced on behalf of the Acocks Green Village Partnership, a committee of representatives made of community groups, Acocks Green BID and local traders, so funds raised will go back to the local area.

If you Go Down to the Woods Today..

Our local sculptor Steve Rainbow has been chipping away in the woods of
Westley Vale Millennium Green over the summer, adding two welcome and interesting sculptures to our special green space. Lots of people have seen ‘The Hand’  but ‘Dragon’ is well hidden in the woods.. but a great find when you come across it!
