Successful Canal Clean Up

On Sunday 9th July a group of volunteers from Acocks Green spent a couple of hours cleaning up the Grand Union Canal with the Canals and Rivers Trust Volunteer Co-Ordinator – Steve Lambert. The group litter-picked, cut back overhanging branches and were supported by the Shirley Sea Cadets in their kayaks who picked up litter floating in the canal. Also with the use of grappling hooks the group pulled out 6 bicycles, an office chair, a table and a creepy doll! Don’t have nightmares!

Thanks to everyone who turned out. The next meet up will be on
Sunday 17th September, 10am, meet on the Vineries Bridge, Woodcock Lane. All equipment provided.  Come along and join in the fun!

Village in Bloom Art Competition 2017

As part of the annual Village in Bloom Campaign the team organise an Art Competition for children in the area with a relevant theme. This year the Royal Horticultural Britain in Bloom theme was Gardening for Wildlife so the children were asked children to consider this in their design. There were over 290 wonderful entries, it was so hard for the team to choose the winners. Thank you to everyone who took part and the local schools who were so supportive.

Below are just a few of our favourites, there were too many to upload all of them – we have some very creative young people here in AG.

This week, and at the end of the month, there is a chance to hear professional musicians playing a range of classical music on your doorstep.

This Wednesday (14th June), you can enjoy the relaxed and beautiful setting of St Mary’s Church with the regular Swansong concert series as they present the Mondelli Wind Quintet. The Conservatoire-trained musicians will be playing a variety of music from Janáček to Mozart. The performance starts at 7.30pm with an interval for refreshments. Donations are requested at the end.

Acocks Green’s First Blue Plaque

The Forum was delighted to hear that Acocks Green has received the honour of it’s first very own blue plaque recently.

Some of our older readers will remember John Curry OBE (1949 – 1994), the local young man who, in 1976, made figure skating history. Millions of people watched in awe of his performance at the Winter Olympics where he won two gold medals for team GB. He very soon became a sporting hero and won BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Arden Lodge, Warwick Road.  Former home of John Curry

But as time has gone on John Curry has slowly slipped out of the public consciousness and his untimely death in 1994 left a generation completely unaware of his achievements.

Actor and writer Tony Timberlake who had been a young boy when he first saw John Curry skate, embarked on personal journey to highlight the great success of the ice skater from Birmingham. Timberlake wrote a one man show, Looking for John, which premiered at Birmingham Repertory Theatre last November and by nominating John Curry, with the support of The REP, to be honoured with a Blue Plaque in his home city.

“Getting recognition for John Curry has been a labour of love. Watching him win Olympic gold forty years ago had a huge impact on me as a youngster and it’s never left me. My play Looking for John made me think about John’s legacy – how he changed the world of figure skating and how he never denied who he was in his personal life. I felt he deserved to be remembered and celebrated again in the city where he was born and then died. I’m thrilled that John Curry will be celebrated once more and remembered forever in this way.”  – John Timberlake

The Birmingham Civic Society has been responsible for erecting Blue Plaques in the city since 1953 and there are currently over 80 around Birmingham. The Lord Mayor Councillor Carl Rice and John Curry’s brother, Andrew, unveiled the Blue Plaque on 15th May, awarded by Birmingham Civic Society, in honour of John’s achievements.

New Sculpture Arriving in the Village

A sculpture inspired by the work of the Village in Bloom team and the heritage of our area has been installed on the island in the centre of Acocks Green this week. Designed by Bloom volunteer and artist Veronica Treadwell  and locally manufactured by W.R. and J. Collins Ltd in Hall Green, the stylised oak tree design makes reference to the ancient Forest of Arden and Mallard Community Orchard. It also features a horse drawn narrowboat and a steam locomotive referencing the history and development of our area in the 19th Century. On top of the sculpture is a stylised flower in full bloom, topped with the word ‘GOLD’ – the accolade received from RHS Britain in Bloom over the last two years.

The New Sculpture in the Sunshine

This has been very much a local community project. It has been supported by our councillors and Birmingham City Council Highways Division with the financing organised by our Acocks Green Village Business Improvement District Manager.
