Join the Allotment Movement

There is nothing more rewarding than eating fresh home grown food and there is an opportunity in Acocks Green to do just that.

There are vacant plots available at the local allotments. Sizes and costs vary and they are half price for Over 60s. Gardening on an allotment gives you lots of space to dedicate to growing your favourite produce and the advice and experience of other local gardeners is also close at hand. And of course, fresh air, exercise and array of healthy food! This is a good time to start an allotment so that you can prepare the land for spring planting. It might be an idea to get family and friends involved too and then you can share the rewards.  If you are a new to gardening  there are lots of helpful gardening books at the local libraries.

Steve Cox (pictured) is on the committee for Clay Lane & Wharf Land  Allotments (just off Yardley Road and near Yardley Cemetry). He can give advice on taking a plot and organise viewings. To contact Steve by can email: claylaneallotments@gmail.com

Saving Oak Meadow

Oak Meadow is an Open Green Space just off the Grand Union Canal in Acocks Green. It is accessible from the towpath and has paths running through it that take you to Cambridge Way and Eaton Wood Drive. It is a protected area for local people to enjoy maintained by Birmingham City Council.

Two years ago the council planted 10 tall oak trees along the edge of the footpaths. Unfortunately because of exceptionally dry weather the trees all died due to lack of rain. Last winter the council replaced the trees, Sadly two trees were vandalised but the others seemed to be doing well. However during the summer some locals, who enjoy walking through the meadow, noticed the oak leaves were growing brown and shrivelling again. Swift action was required. Fortunately the canal is close by so the tree-lovers, including Cottesbrooke Walking Group out on their weekly walk, rallied around and collected water from the canal giving the thirsty trees much needed water!

Over the dry spells of summer local people watered the trees again and green leaves and new shoots started appearing.

This month members of the Neighbourhood Forum arranged a meeting with the Parks Manager Pat Tarry to discuss the future of the trees. Pat, a trained horticulturalist, explained how the trees had died back from the tips, because there wasn’t enough water to reach the height of the trees because the root system had not fully established, but that there was some life in the main trunks of all the trees but one. He has arranged for his team to prune back the dead wood in the near future and next year assures us that, with the exception of one, the trees should come back to full healthy growth.

With the restrictions of council budgets, the fact is that volunteers play a vital role in our area. We can all make a positive difference with a little effort.

Village in Bloom – Silver Award!

It was announced at the Heart of England Village in Bloom on Thursday 12th September that Acocks Green Village had won a Silver Award for its many improvements.

The hard work of our Village in Bloom team really paid off this year. Acocks Green Village in Bloom Co-ordinator Fran and two other volunteers attended the award ceremony in Tamworth.  Fran, was also surprised and delighted that the judges decided to give her a Merit Award. The comments from the judges were most encouraging :

‘What a difference a year makes.’

They were of course impressed with the new street furniture, some of it new and some of it painted, which the Highways Division of the Council had installed ready for the day of judging. The judges also commented on our heritage buildings and the biodiversity of  Westley Vale Millennium Green.  They were impressed with the street cleaning and of course Mallard Community Orchard.  They considered the mural at the orchard the highlight of the whole route and sent a big well done to local artist Hannah Brown.  They also commented that it was good to see the support from the local businesses, some of whom had put planters and hanging baskets in place and some had provided refreshments to our working team.

As Fran says:
“This has definitely proved that the people of Acocks Green are prepared to make it a place in which they can be proud to live!  We have new projects in mind for next year, and we are seeking additional volunteers for many of the jobs involved, it’s not just about planting. There are a variety of ways that you can help the project”.
