Get Digging in Acocks Green

In a recent news item on BBC Midlands it was announced that there are over 1000 free allotments around Birmingham. This was a little misleading because it implied that they were ‘free’ as in there was no cost, however what they actually meant is that there are lots of allotments available to let.  Rates are reasonable however and sizes vary. Urban Veg, a Birmingham based organisation who promote urban food production, have explained in full the different ways you can find out more about becoming an allotment holder here:

Plots to let at Yardley Road allotments, Acocks Green

Acocks Green has its fair share of vacant allotment plots. These are available at the Yardley Road allotments. (Access is via the track that runs down beside the canal and the cemetery off Yardley Road). There are also plots in Fox Hollies, next to the leisure centre. Why not get out into your community, get fitter, meet new people as well as producing your own fresh home grown food.

“The Constant Wife is a lovely feminist vehicle: if your husband plays around, boot him out and get a sex-life.”

London.  1920s.  The height of civilised society.  Where husbands are husbands and wives are….constant. Constance is calm, intelligent and self-aware. Her husband, a successful Harley Street Doctor is being unfaithful with her best friend.  Her friends know.  Her sister knows.  Even her mother knows.  But what they don’t know is that Constance knows about it too, but is dealing with it in her own deliciously devilish way.  Revenge hath no fury like a modern woman scorned.

Springtime at St Mary’s

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The path through the churchyard of St Mary’s was lined with spring flowers such as bluebells and primula on the sunny evening of the Swansong’s aptly named  ‘Music in Spring’ concert.

St Mary’s have been hosting these delightful musical evenings instead of the usual venue of Acocks Green Library, because of the impending roof works. Talented Swedish musicians Sarah Wilander (piano) and Linnea Markgren (soprano) delighted the 50 strong audience with a varied programme of songs and piano. The sun shone through the striking Byrne-Jones stained glass window as the musicians took to the alter.  The local community enjoyed a wonderful selection of music linked with the themes of spring, summer and nature. These included some Swedish and French songs, and piano solos of nocturnes from Benjamin Britton and Samuel Barber. After refreshments the pair continued to entertain with another selection including Debussy’s beautiful Clair de Lune and the exciting and powerful Dance of the Trolls from Grieg’s Peer Gynt.  Linnea introduced each selection with little insights about the pieces and their reasons for choosing them.

Thanks to former Acocks Green Librarian Mike Byrne for continuing to organise such well-appreciated evenings, to which all music lovers are welcome. The next Swansong is on Wednesday 24th July.  K’antu Ensemble will perform songs and dances of Renaissance Europe. Donations are made at the end of the evening. Make a note in your diary and come and enjoy musical enlightenment in Acocks Green!

Acocks Green Village in Bloom Launched

There was a great turn-out of volunteers on Saturday 13th April to launch the Village in Bloom 2013 entry, and for once it was warm and sunny.  Box hedging was planted as well as holly and hawthorn hedging and a variety of herbs. The focus of the Village in Bloom this year is edible plants, so it is appropriate that this year we have had the addition of the wonderful Mallard Community Orchard to Acocks Green. Nine fruit trees have been planted as well as fruit bushes. There is lots more work to do around the village, to make it more attractive, not just with gardening, but tidying, painting and repairs. A friendly bunch of volunteers meet most Wednesdays and Sundays and new volunteers are always welcome. Find out more on the Village in Bloom page.

Fran Lee the co-ordinator of Acocks Green Village in Bloom says that this project has been very popular with locals creating an edible oasis on what used to be a derelict piece of land full of rubble, sweet wrappers and car parts!

Stephanie Eynon, RHS Community Horticulture Manager, said

Britain in Bloom isn’t just about pretty hanging baskets brightening up gloomy streets, it’s about improving the environment, enhancing lives and bringing communities together through gardening. Edible Britain’ will see new public herb and vegetable gardens planted across the UK, bringing access to tasty produce to thousands.

Each year more than 200,000 people devote almost 4.4 million hours to enhancing their community through Britain in Bloom, saving the country thousands of pounds.  On average groups plant 115,000 trees, 352,000 shrubs and 21.6 million plants and bulbs each year.

Anybody can set up or join their nearest group by typing in their postcode into an online map found at www.rhs.org.uk/getinvolved For more information regarding Acocks Green Village in Bloom, please contact Fran Lee at Acocks Green Village in Bloom on 0121 706 0076/e.mail: fran.lee47@yahoo.co.uk . New volunteers are always welcome.
