Don’t forget that Acocks Green’s Community Event of the Year is on this Saturday at Westley Road Recreation Ground (next to the bus garage). Here is a lovely photo from the archive of one of the floats from 26 years ago from Acocks Green History Society’s website. The Carnival has been part of the Acocks Green Calendar for well over 30 years. The carnival will include a Football Tournament, Charity Dog Show, Street Procession,( arriving at the site at 1.30pm). Youth Stage, Punch & Judy, Majorettes, Elvis Presley tribute and much more. The MC and shows start at 12.00. The football tournament starts at 10am.
There will be the usual array of over 50 stalls from local charities, community groups and organisations. This year Acocks Green Neighbourhood Forum will have a stall selling some interesting plants so come along and say hello. Also for the first time Acocks Green Village in Bloom will also have a stall, so they can promote the work that is going in to making Acocks Green more attractive with plants and tidying. So after last year’s cancellation (due to waterlogged park), we are hoping for sunshine and lots of community spirit this Saturday. Hope to see you there.
Are you taking part in this year’s Carnival? Get in touch and let us know so we can add to this article.
The Birmingham Irish Pipes & Drums are again taking part in the Carnival. It comes almost in the middle of a hectic six weekend programme of appearances for us. On the 22 Jun we led the Wellington Carnival. On the 29 Jun we led the Shifnal Carnival – both in Shropshire. We have Acocks Green on 6 Jul followed by the Astwood Bank Carnival, Redditch on 13th. The following day we’re competing in a pipe band competition in Corby. And finally on the 21st we’re competing and appearing at the Ashbourne Highland Gathering, Derbyshire. We then break up for the summer before returning on the 1st Sep for another competition at Chatsworth.
Sounds like a busy summer you have. Well glad you are going to be part of the parade. See you on Saturday 🙂
