The weather looked off putting on Sunday for the scheduled clean up on the Grand Union canal, but it dried up and we had a great turn out of around 10 people come along. We pulled out rubbish from the canal, including a shopping trolley (of course), a strimmer and other debris. Lots of litter was cleared from reachable areas of the canal and from the tow path.
We now need to educate local people about keeping our area clean, not dropping litter, not dumping rubbish over their garden fence and not thinking out-of-sight, out-of-mind. It is quite possible that the litter dumped in the canal in Acocks Green could end up in our oceans, polluting our environment for years and years to come.
Thanks for the support from the Canals and Rivers Trust. They supplied us with some native primroses and campion. They also brought all the equipment we needed. We swept up lots of dead leaves and made a real difference, thanks to everyone who turned up to help tidy our stretch.
Hi when is the next canal clean up event? Id like to help.
Hello Claire. The next canal clean up is Sunday 14th July. Meet at the old canal bridge on Woodock Lane at 10am. Hope to see you there then!
I’ll be joining too!
Hello Farah, that’s good. We will meet you then on 14th July. In the meantime I can ask around about any other suitable volunteering opportunities in the area. – Ged, Acocks Green Neighbourhood Forum
