Remember the terrible floods last month around Birmingham? Acocks Green was particularly badly affected. Today a man called Robert got in touch and we thought we would share his comments with you. An example of the kindness of strangers and the great community we have here in AG. Thanks also to Helen Talbot for the photograph which captures the scale of the floods well.

Dear Acocks Green
On the Bank Holiday Sunday my car was inundated in the downpour while negotiating the flooded Acocks Green roundabout. This could have been so much more of a disaster were it not for the kindness of so many of you in Acocks Green.
No sooner had the car stopped but volunteers jumped into the water to help push us out – Thank you. As we tried to get the car going someone asked if she could help and went back to her home and brought us a can of maintenance spray – Thank you. While we waited for the recovery company the Pizza Hut Delivery people offered to feed us – Thank you. To the many motorists, pedestrians & residents who stopped to ask if they could help & offered their sympathy- Thank you all. To the staff of Beeches the recovery company who were so considerate and helpful when they recovered the car and accommodated us in their office and sustained us with tea while we waited – Thank you
Our thanks go out to all of the people of Acocks Green – your actions and your humanity in this time of crisis was truly astounding and renewed my faith in the goodness of human nature.
On the upside the journey home on a low loader dried our car out and it is now none the worse for wear.
Next Tuesday come along to this friendly get-together. Bring your friends and neighbours or come on your own. You will get a warm welcome.

Saturday 7th July will see the return of Acocks Green Carnival as usual at Acocks Green Recreation Ground, Westley Road. It’s the annual community get-together. Lots to see and do for all the family. Get in touch with the committee if you would like to help or have a stall. The details of everything you need to know is on our Carnival Page. Acocks Green Neighbourhood Forum will be there along with Village in Bloom. Come and support your local community.

Have you seen the beautiful array of tulips around the village? Definitely the best display ever. Thanks to the Village in Bloom Team and all the volunteers who came along in November and helped plant them. It was worth the effort. Why not do a tulip trail to see them all? If you click on the pictures it will tell you where they are. Catch them before they’re gone!
Canals & River Trust sent their litter-picking boat along our patch on Wednesday. Also we had around 20 volunteers out on Sunday for our clean up including 3 very helpful guys from Shirley Sea Cadets in their kayaks.

The Litter Picking Team from Canals and Rivers Trust – Wednesday 25th April.
We picked up lots of litter, pulled out junk from the canal bed and sowed wild flower seeds. The Canals Trust barge were continuing up the canal towards Birmingham and were hoping to remove the sofa that had been dumped from the shores of the Millennium Green. Unfortunately keeping the canals clean is a full time job because of some people’s irresponsible disposal of rubbish.
Thanks to all the local people who help in improving our environment and dispose of rubbish responsibly!
