One Month to Go…

Last year, many readers will know Acocks Green received a GOLD award from the Royal Horticultural Society’s Village in Bloom Awards. This was thanks to lots of hard work and dedication from many people and organisations working together for the greater good of Acocks Green.

The Village has entered the RHS Bloom event again this year and is hoping to continue their success. The team have been working hard all year in the village and with schools and organisations to enhance the area. The Judges will be arriving on Tuesday 12th July.

This is a request from the Village in Bloom team to anyone who might be interested in helping out at this crucial time. No gardening experience is required, but you are sure to learn something about gardening along the way. Help with watering is also required. The friendly Bloom team meet on Wednesday and Sunday morning, so introduce yourself or get in touch below.

A Good Morning’s Work

Thanks so much to all those who spent the morning working on the Grand Union Canal on Sunday. It was perfect weather and we were pleased to see our colleague Steve from Canals and Rivers Trust return with all his equipment, as part of the Adopt a Stretch of Canal Scheme. We had some new volunteers who had seen our posters along the canal join up too. So we were able to achieve a lot.

Some of the wild flowers we sowed have come up, the trees we planted are doing well and we planted a few more native plants that C&RT brought along. We saw an array of boats and ducks on the water and it was a thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable morning.

Our next meet up will be in September. If you would like to be on the mailing list to inform you of the next dates then just drop us a line via the ‘Contact Us‘ page.

Time to Vote – Thursday 5th May

This Thursday is the Birmingham City Council Elections, time to vote for our local Councillor. So make use of your right to vote and get yourself down to the polling station. They are open from 7am to 10pm. If you have lost your polling card don’t worry, you can still vote by giving your name and address to the polling clerk.

John O’Shea, the local Labour Councillor, has completed his two year role and so local people have to decide to vote for John again or choose another Councillor in his place.

Our friends from Acocks Green Focus Group have put forward a list of the candidates standing and presented them with a list of questions relevant to the people of Acocks Green. You can read all the details of how they answered here:

Canal Clean Up Session

We were lucky with the weather for our ‘Adopt a Stretch of the Canal’ session this Sunday. Thanks to Ralph from Canals & Rivers Trust, who stepped into replace Steve, our usual Volunteer Supporter after a cycling accident, (get well soon Steve). We tackled some of the graffiti, sowed wild flowers and picked up plenty of litter. It was great to meet some new enthusiastic locals who want to do something positive to improve our area.

Lots of people were out enjoying the canal with its new towpath. If you would like to be on a mailing list for the next session please contact us. Together we can be the guardians of our historic waterway.
