Greening of the Green – The Smart Route – Trees and Planters

Here’s the news that many people have been waiting for.  Our Village in Bloom team has been advised of the details of the trees and shrubs which are going to planted on the ‘Smart Route.’ 17 trees will be planted directly in the ground. Due to a large underground gas pipe extending from Station Road to Woodcock Lane 10 trees are to be planted in large containers and under planted with attractive shrubs.

Below is a plan of where the trees and shrubs are going to be located. It is very detailed, but if you are interested, click on the picture to see the specifics. TP indicates Tree Pit – this is where the trees are going to be put into the ground. PP indicates where the square containers are going to be placed with small trees and shrubs. SC is an indication of the planters which are already in place.

The council officers have made some good choices and consulted the Bloom team on their preferences. The volunteers expressed a preference for blossom trees and its good so see that there will be several flowering cherry trees.

We won’t translate all the Latin names but to give you a flavour – Prunus s. ‘Sunset Boulevard‘  is a flowering Cherry.  There are also trees with a tulip shaped flower, a Silver Lime often known as Linden trees, which bears yellow flowers in June/July. Liquidambars worplesdon bears flowers in March/April and fruits in Autumn.

In the planters again we have shrubs and trees which will give us colourful leaves including the Photinia x f. ‘Red Robin’ a popular garden shrub. The Cornus has delicate leaves which when fallen reveal colourful stems in the winter. A real favourite with the Village in Bloom is  Magnolia Stellata – the Star Magnolia which has star like flowers in the Spring. Amongst the shrubs we will see the Woolly Willow and a Hebe with large blue flowers – good for attracting butterflies. Also the attractive garden favourite Euonymus. There is also Box and Spanish gorse. Salvia has pale blue flowers and is part of the sage family.

This excellent mix will provide not only visual interest throughout the year with colourful leaves and flowers and some of them have lovely scents. Most have been chosen for their drought tolerance and hardiness in public places. The trees will be underpinned to provide stability and we have been told that they will not have those unsightly wooden support poles.

The ‘official’ opening of the Smart Route is Wednesday 23rd September.  Tree planting always takes place in the winter months however and should commence in November/December.

Also the Bloom team will be having Bulb-Planting Sessions in October and November and creating new beds to give added WOW factor to our village. If you would like to come along and help on these popular projects, please contact:

Village in Bloom Presents Best Shop Front Award

This year, as part of the Acocks Green Village in Bloom project, a Best Shop Front Award has been launched. The AG Village in Boom team recently presented the first award to The Swan Trio for their contribution. Fran Lee, Bloom Co-ordinator tells us why they won this prestigious award:

Best Shop Front – The Swan Trio

Hazel and her colleagues put on a fantastic show for the judges from Britain in Bloom when they visited us on 8th July. They had the brilliant idea to display a representative range of items customers can find inside their shop. The judges were greeted by a line of plant pots on top of the wall, adorned with handmade poppies moulded from old CDs and a pair of boots to illustrate their shoe repairing business (not a load of cobblers), planted up with flowers.

Another clever idea was to use garden canes topped with mohair wool in a variety of colours, echoing a vase of flowers. Butterflies made from brightly coloured pieces of material fluttered from tennis rackets, timed perfectly for Wimbledon and, to add to the welcoming aspect of this business, Hazel’s daughter served drinks and snacks to the judging party which was gratefully received.

Knitted dolls, showing that they sell all kinds of wool, were dressed in baby clothes which are also for sale inside.  The window displayed a good range of jewellery, photo frames and leather goods. What a delight to visit.

Also making our village look attractive, Bowen’s estate agency adorned a new fence with patio roses in addition to the line of Pelargoniums displayed over the shop – who said that estate agents did not always smell of roses?! Banquet Cafe has put up an new attractive awning and E and J Barbers by Woodcock Lane have painted the front of their shop. Gossips took advantage of one of our hanging baskets as well as two planters at the entrance of their shop. Midland Schoolwear also have one of our hanging baskets. The Inn on the Green displays four of our hanging baskets, as does the Red Lion and Thai Dy nail bar next door. Bodylines also enters into the spirit, with their colourful hanging baskets throughout the summer. The team are very grateful for the support it has received from such businesses. Lets hope it is a sign of more support to come.

We are all starting to realise that a clean, well presented shopping centre will attract the crowds made even more attractive, of course, by all the wonderful planting.

Please contact us if you are interested in supporting the campaign in any way.

A Good Morning’s Work beside the Canal.

Thanks to the 9 volunteers who turned up on a sunny Sunday morning to improve the Canal around Vineries Bridge. Lots of litter was collected, railings rubbed down and painted and weeding done.

Steve, the Volunteer Co-Ordinator, brought along his power tools and spent time cutting back overhanging branches. The towpath looked a lot more tidy after 2 hours work. The next working session will be in October. If you make use of the canal and want to help improve it then get in touch to go on the mailing list for updates on our sessions.

Smarter Route – New Planters and Trees

The Bloom team has been advised that before the end of June, the council will be placing twenty rectangular containers on the new paving. These will be the same as the one by Burtons.

Seventeen new street trees will be planted in the Autumn and due to a large underground gas pipe, the council is placing 10 large square planters on the pavement with trees and shrubs for all year round interest.

Acocks Green is being judged by the Royal Horticultural Society on Wednesday 8th July in the Britain in Bloom campaign, so if you can help us to meet the deadline with all types of last minute jobs please contact the Village in Bloom Team, watering, weeding, litter-picking and planting, every little bit can help the campaign.
